Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be doing so well? Whether it be in terms of happiness or financially or athletically or anything else that comes to mind. Some of us look upon those people as people who ‘have it all’. Well what if I told you that there’s a secret and a system that anyone can follow to become one of those people that ‘has it all’. But it starts with this first step. A step that is so simple yet often overlooked and taken for granted. Its something that is so vital that if ignored, will leave anyone aimless, depressed and lost. Its your vision!
Whenever we have that itch or desire. That gawk we give to the ‘have it all’er’ or HIA. We momentarily visualize ourselves as that person. Some of us, the more ambitious ones, might even decide to become that object of our desire, but shrug it off as impossible. Yet achieving this goal is not impossible at all. It is very much achievable. How? Well think about it. The person who is financially successful was, at one point struggling to pay the bills. The person who is physically fit was at some point either average or overweight. The person who has that nuclear family of two kids and a beautiful spouse was at some point single. Do you see the common theme? All of these people were at some point the opposite of what they are today. The main difference, they each decided to make a change in their lives to become the object of their desire or the HIA. This decision is the starting point. In order to follow through you need a vision!
A vision essentially is a picture of what you want to achieve. Its different from a “mission” which defines how you will achieve this. To understand the importance of this, lets look at the reverse. Lewis Carol wrote in a famous book that needs not to be named “One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Chesire cat in a tree. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ he responded. ‘I don’t know.’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it doesn’t matter!’ ” If you don’t know where you want to go or what you want to achieve then the road of life doesn’t really seem to matter much does it? Motivational speaker Craig Valentine often says “Be driven by your vision or you’ll be taken for a ride in someone else’s” Not only do you need to have a vision in life, but you also need to be constantly working towards it and have a desire to move towards achieving it.
Every goal needs a vision. I was once sitting in on a speech that the president of Sleep Country Canada, Christine Magee, gave. She outlined how the first years of her business were incredibly difficult and at times, unbearable to the point where her relationships with her family were strained. Her desire and her vision is what got her through those difficult times and onward to becoming one of the leading mattress distributors today.
Tony Robbins, one of the worlds leading motivational speakers wasn’t always as rich, fit and successful. He used to live in a 1 bedroom apartment and always wondered how he was going to pay next months rent. Yet he kept at it, he had a vision for himself to become someone who helps people through his teachings.
Brian Tracy had a similar story. He never finished high school, often got in trouble with the law and work dead end job after dead end job. It wasn’t until he had gotten into sales and had the vision of becoming one of the top 10% of sales professionals in his area that he really started to fly.
Years ago, I had a vision of becoming someone better then I was at the time. I was a junior engineer at an aerospace company and I wanted to move up. So I decided to try for a masters degree in engineering. It was a great vision but the problem was that I was a C student in my undergrad despite my work ethic back them. So the challenge of not only completing but also getting into a school was daunting. It was my vision of seeing that piece of paper on my wall that got me through those difficult times where I wanted to give up.
How do you come up with a vision? Well the first step is to decide on what you want to do. Have a clear picture of it in your mind. Don’t assume or tell yourself that its silly or impossible. Always, always, always believe that nothing is impossible. Just tell yourself that if someone can put a man on the moon or a bunch of SUV sized robots on Mars, that you can do what you want to do. That it CAN be done.
The next step is to write it down. There is immense power in writing things down. Its almost like you’re writing a contract with yourself to achieve this goal of yours.
The final step is to refer to it from time to time. We, as human beings tend to forget. We need those constant reminders and having your written contract with yourself top refer to time and time again is ideal.
However, there are times where, despite having a vision, you may find yourself lost. That’s ok, just refer back to your vision. If you have to, revise it. But the bottom line is stick with it. We all get lost. We all get sidetracked just don’t let it bog you down. See it as a learning point and move forward with your vision. If you do that, nobody can stop you.
Well there you have it, your vision is your key to starting and ultimately achieving your goal. Most importantly, once you have that vision, don’t ever let anyone or anything get in your way.
