One of the hardest parts of speaking is getting the courage to step up to the podium. The proverbial “butterflies in your stomach” is so common even to the most advanced of speakers. Its also another reason why people put off giving their speech.
Recall from an earlier post that I said that we are afraid of failing or falling flat on our faces during the speech and that I did fall flat on my face on more than 1 occasion. Its that fear that drives us away. However, theres also one very important thing that helps alleviate this fear for me. Its that the audience is not there to see you fail. They WANT you to succeed. Sounds crazy doesn’t it? But think about it, the last time you heard a speech, did you have any ill thoughts towards that speaker? Did you tell yourself; “I hope he/she fails miserably”.
Nobody wants to see a speaker fail, they want you as a speaker to give the best speech you possibly can. Its in their interests to see you succeed. Why? Well think about the last time you heard a really bad speech, how painful was it to sit through? Also, your audience is there to learn from you, therefore they want to take in as much as they can that you can offer to them.
If you’re a Toastmaster giving a speech at your club, even better. Toastmasters are the most easy going and supportive group that you’ll ever come across.
So get out there and give that speech!
